Werk statt Konsum — Open Carpentry and Upcycling

Werk statt Konsum
Werk statt Konsum (handiwork instead of consumption)

This first and only open wood-workshop in Kiel offers space to build, repair, re- and upcycle and for creativity. The core ideas are a realization of joint handicraft activities as well as mutual learning and helping. Anonymous shopping? Cheap mass production? Careless treatment of resources? Werk statt Konsum tries to act against this trends and developments. The throw away attitude and consumerism of our society is a problem which should be faced in anecessary transition to a sustainable society.

Alternative ways of usage need to be offered to make a change. Especially in thefield of furniture these alternatives are often missing. The Werk statt Konsum is such an alternative, where objects find a new value and often new purpose through handiwork and creativity. Thereby, we contribute to the education for sustainable development and offer a framework for ecological and practical experiences. In 2014 we successfully participated in the yooweedoo contest and received a onetime financially support to be able to start the project.

Practically, this means that Werk statt Konsum supplies the room, tools and knowhow for woodwork free of charge. The workshop is open for everyone and based, as much as possible, on exchange and donations - especially in the case of tools, material and know-how.

The Werk statt Konsum is an active part of the „Alte MU“ (registered association), which consists of divers creative, social and sustainable projects and initiatives located in the former Muthesius Artschool, in the center of Kiel. Joint events such as summer/winter/autumn/spring fairs are one example for this interaction. Furthermore the Werk statt Konsum cooperates with interested partners of all kind, for example the „Junge Bühne Kiel“, the „Mädchentreff Kiel“, „Holzknoten“ and others.
