Do GES Solutions lead to a world the next generation wants to live in?

To answer this question, we head up for schools and their partner schools and initiated a school projects. Together with students, we discuss whether the Solutions of the GES correspond to a world in which the students want to live. We invite students to present their solution proposals and encourage a dialogue about what each individual and what schools can do to tackle global problems.

During the Global Economic Symposium (GES) 2013 in Kiel the students had their chance to present their ideas at the IHK Schleswig-Holstein to an interested audience.

Gymnasium Wellingdorf

Gymnasium WellingdorfThe Gymnasium Wellingdorf is a veteran in our GES-School project. It was one of the two founding schools in the GES-2011 School project and, with one student as observatory and reporter for local media, also participated in the GES 2012 in Rio de Janeiro.

Seven students from the Gymnasium Wellingdorf have opted for the “Future of Europe” issue and for “Realizing Global Maritime Surveillance”. It will focus on the problem of euro countries and will discuss reforms such as the banking union as well as suggestions from the academic corner, such as an orderly retreat from the Euro by introducing parallel currencies. For the latter issue, Wellingdorf will concentrate on the security aspect of maritime surveillance.

Humboldt-Schule Kiel

Humboldt-Schule, KielLike the Gymnasium Wellingdorf, the Humboldt Schule is a veteran partner and participated in the GES 2011 in Kiel as well as, through one of its students, in the GES 2012 in Rio de Janeiro. This year, the Humboldt-Schule, has embarked upon three issues:

    - Designing Waste and Recycling Policies by concentrating on information, rule-making and incentives,
    - Realizing Global Maritime Surveillance (with special focus on the security aspect), and the
    - Future of Monetary Reform and Financial Market Reform (with special focus on the situation in Europe).

    Twelve students in total are going to discuss new solutions, to assess the viability of solutions already made in the past, and to propose actions available for everybody to actively contribute.

    Anne-Frank-Schule, Bargteheide

    Anne-Frank-Schule, Bargteheide

    Though being remotely located from Kiel, the Anne-Frank-Schule (AFS) took an early initiative to become a partner in the GES 2013 School project. In early June 2013, this school gained nation-wide attention because of being awarded in the German School Award Contest supported by the Robert-Bosch Foundation for its outstanding achievements in graduating each student up to his/her potential.

    In the GES school project, the AFS will concentrate on a main question: Which prerequisites must be met in order to ensure that the Euro will be reliably and permanently accepted by European citizens as their preferred currency? Almost thirty students will tackle this question from various angles: social and financial sustainability, the process towards a banking union, the legitimacy of the Euro and the ECB in EU-wide democratization and political integration, challenges in maintaining the attractiveness of the Euro in an intergenerational context of debt consolidation, and the trade-offs which a more powerful ECB may incur if it is charged with conflicting targets beyond monetary stability.

    Gymnasium Altenholz

    Gymnasium Altenholz

    For the first time also 14 students from the Gymnasium Altenholz, which lies just outside Kiel beyond the Kiel Canal connecting the North and Baltic See, will prepare themselves on various GES challenges and interact with the experts from the GES in our intergenerational dialogue. The students are working in teams to compare existing solutions and develop their own on the following GES topics:

      - The Future of Monetary Policy and Financial Market Reform
      - Trade, Poverty and Inequality

      - Social Norms and Moral Principles to Reduce Poverty and Improve Equity
      - The Future of Europe

      Alexander-von-Humboldt-Schule, Neumünster

      Humboldt-Schule, NeumünsterAlso the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Schule (AHS) from Neumünster has joined the partnership with the GES this year. Executive Director of the GES, Alessio J.G. Brown, has been impressed by the intense preparations and the engagement and motivation of the various students from the 11th grade, who are working on their ideas and solution proposals. The students have chosen to focus on the challenge of Governing the World’s Oceans and within this topic go in depth and address selected subtopics. As pointed out by the seventeen year old Jana Hanisch, the challenge is to come up with concrete solution proposals!

      Helene-Lange-Gymnasium, Rendsburg

      Helene-Lange-Gymnasium, RendsburgHelene-Lange-Gymnasium, RendsburgThe Helene-Lange-Gymnasium (Hela) has opted for the sessions on “What Banking for Economic Dynamism?” and for “Towards Sustainable Consumption”.

      In June Willi Scholz, Deputy Executive Director of the GES, and the researchers Carola Kniebes and Henning Weber visited the Hela and met with the students and discussed possible ways of addressing the challenges. Eight students of the Hela will focus on the one hand on regulating the shadow banking system and on the other hand are going to discuss innovative solutions for changing consumer behavior. In addition, they will propose on the latter actions available for everybody to actively contribute, thereby following the motto “think global – act local”.

      Richard-Hallmann-Schule, Trappenkamp

      Richard-Hallmann-Schule in Trappenkamp - GES School Project 2013Richard-Hallmann-Schule, Trappenkamp This school has decided in favor of two issues: Designing Waste and Recycling Policies by concentrating on consumer and producer responsibilities, and The Future of Europe with special focus on a possible trade-off between integration deepening and widening. Six students will be active in these issues.
