Global Economic Symposium: Experts Analyse the Future of the Arab World

Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) in cooperation with Leibniz Information Centre for Economics (ZBW)

September 17, 2013

“Poisonous gas attacks in Syria”, “Bloody revolt in Egypt”, “Once again, thousands of demonstrators on Tahrir Square” – in the last few weeks the unrest in Arab countries has dominated the headlines and do not seem close to ending soon. Against this background, international experts shall discuss possibilities for solving the conflicts in these countries in the session “The Future of the Arab World” at the Global Economic Symposium (GES) in Kiel on October 1, 2013.

The session will include discussions involving Mehmet Şimşek, Turkish Finance Minister, Prince Turki al Faisal Al Saud, President of the “King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies”, Abdul Al Jaber, CEO of the telecommunications concern Zain for the Levant region and Wim Kok, former Prime Minister of the Netherlands and President of the Club de Madrid.

The Global Economic Symposium aims to find answers to urgent questions arising as a result of the developments in the Arab world: What are the most likely scenarios for the next two or three years? Is the situation in Egypt endangering peace in the whole region? Will the civil wars in Syria and Iraq, which are based on the conflict between Sunnis and Shiites, spread to other countries? Are other countries, which have so far been relatively calm, smouldering under the surface, and can we also soon expect crowds to take to the streets in Morocco, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia or the Gulf States? Is youth unemployment really the root of the conflicts and, if so, how can it be countered politically?

Approximately 600 international decision makers in government, business, science, and civil society are expected to come together for the 6th Global Economic Symposium (GES 2013) on October 1–2. Their objective: to develop solutions to current global problems:

The Global Economic Symposium (GES) 2013 is being organized by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) in cooperation with the German National Library of Economics – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics (ZBW).
