Save the Date – 6th Global Economic Symposium (GES) Kiel, October 1-2

August 23, 2013

“Redefining Success” is the meta-theme of the 6th Global Economic Symposium (GES) to be held in Kiel on October 1-2, where approximately 600 international decision makers in government, business, science, and civil society will come together to develop solutions to current global problems. The opening festivities will be held on the evening of September 30.

Please save this date. We will send you an invitation and an accreditation form at the end of August.

New this year! Unlike previous years, the sessions this year will be “on the record” unless particular speakers request otherwise.

The highlights of this year’s GES will be:

  • More than 40 sessions dealing with pressing global problem such as the future of Europe, developments in the Arabic-speaking countries, cybersecurity, and finding a sustainable energy mix, as well as the future of medium-size businesses in Germany.
  • Policymakers and economists will discuss what effect the German election will have and will develop new ways to tackle the euro crisis.
  • The Global Economic Outlook roundtable will analyze what macroeconomic risks to expect, how probable hyperinflation is, and whether new currency and trade wars could occur.
  • Among the participants are: Joaquín Almunia, vice president of the EU Commission and EU competition commissioner, Jacob Frenkel, chairman of JP Morgan Chase International, Dale Mortensen, Nobel laureate in economics, Barry Eichengreen, professor of economics and political science at the University of California (Berkeley),  and Mehmet Şimşek, finance minister of Turkey.

The GES, which was initiated by the Kiel Institute, is held in cooperation with the Leibniz Information Center for Economics (ZBW). Its purpose is not only to provide a discussion platform but also to develop concrete solution proposals for policymakers. It incorporates the findings of recent research.

We look forward to welcoming you at the 6th Global Economic Symposium in Kiel.
