PRISM scandal: Internet constitution needed

June 24, 2013

Internet Governance StructuresThe PRISM program shows that “security” has turned into an excuse to strip away privacy. The electronic surveillance program operated by the United States National Security Agency (NSA) has collected personal data on the internet since 2007. GES-experts suggest to develop an “internet constitution” to take account of the interests of all stakeholders and guarantee essential freedoms. This constitution should be equipped with new instruments and institutions of governance allowing for decentralized decision-making and collective action.

Floods in Europe – Is the „New Economy of Nature“ a way out?

June 14, 2013

Flooding in Frankfurt

Up to now, twenty people reportedly have died in the floods across central Europe after several days of heavy rains. Experts say that rising temperatures in Europe will accentuate rainfall, leading to more frequent and intense floods in many regions. This should be a reason to rethink the way we use the resources of our planet. One way to do so is to turn water, biodiversity, soils and forests – and most notably their capacity for storing CO2 – into tradable goods in order to create a "New Economy of Nature".Read our blog-post and get involved in the Open Solution!

GES Blog: Shale Gas - Is the Gas Revolution Coming to Europe?

Intense research is necessary to secure energy resources for the coming decades. That may also include shale gas. Hence, Europe must not turn its back on research, but should weigh up all the arguments objectively and create a legal framework in which safe and reliable shale gas production is possible, argues Rainer Seele (Wintershall) in his blog-post.
