The Global Economic Symposium 2012 brings together a unique community of keen thinkers, major decision-makers, distinguished researchers, and, for the first time, also virtual communities in the Social Web to come up with open-minded solutions for existing challenges related to this year’s overarching theme “Growth through Education and Innovation.” The solutions will be produced within the context of economic growth and welfare and due to its very nature the Global Economic Symposium 2012 will ensure that the solutions will be both radically new and implementable.

To better connect the Global Economic Symposium (GES) with the huge knowledge residing in virtual communities on the Social Web, ZBW promoted the Global Economic Symposium 2012 and all related themes in the most important social media channels, such as Facebook, Google+, Twitter, etc. The rationale is that making knowledge resources existing in virtual communities available for solving problems in the public sphere might result in more innovative solution approaches and a quicker realization of projects. Also, the technical and organizational knowledge accumulated in such open innovation activities can be used to enrich public projects with the participation of innovative citizens.

Within this context, ZBW has established a new instrument for linking up the Global Economic Symposium with virtual communities on the Web. This new instrument is referred to as GES Open Solution. The GES Open Solution is a nonscientific, open-access platform connecting innovative members of virtual communities with international scientists, business-leaders and decision-makers in a revolutionary way. It opens up windows of opportunities to suggest and discuss solutions for the topic “tackling inequalities of opportunities.” All contributions were judged by an international jury. The contributor of the best idea has been awarded with a ticket to the Global Economic Symposium 2012 enabling him to further engage in the creation of solutions proposed by the virtual community during the event in Rio de Janeiro. Based upon the lessons learned in 2012 we will further elaborate the concept of the Open Solution and the management of the virtual GES community. The vision is to establish a sustainable network and to continue the integration of the community for identifying solutions. This synergetically complements the “physical” GES community and serves as a continuum between the annual symposia.

As director of the ZBW, I am delighted to be one of the cooperation partners of the Global Economic Symposium 2012. My organization, the ZBW-Leibniz Information Centre for Economics, will do its best to bring in all its expertise to make the Global Economic Symposium 2012 in Rio de Janeiro a great success.
