June 20, 2011 Global Resources - Global Responsibility: Solutions to the Race for Resources

The Global demand for mineral resources is steadily increasing and having access to numerous resources has become of strategic importance, not only for high-tech firms but also for countries. The debate about China’s quasi monopoly on rare earths has made it especially clear how important having free access to resources actually is.

How can a level playing field be created for all the players in the international resource markets? How can the race for resources be prevented from causing geopolitical conflicts? What needs to be done to ensure that the exploitation of resources will not continue to destroy the environment?

Together with Veolia Umweltservice GmbH, the Kiel Institute is hosting a podium discussion at which top-flight experts will deal with these and other questions concerning the global allocation of resources.

The speakers will be:

  • Prof. Klaus Töpfer, former federal environment minister and chair of the Energy Ethics Commission
  • Prof. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, former dean of the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at the University of California and former president of the Institut für Klima, Umwelt und Energie in Wuppertal
  • Dr. Thorsten Grenz, CEO of Veolia Umweltservice GmbH
  • Prof. Dennis J. Snower, president of the Kiel Institute

The podium discussion will be held in the Kiel Institute on June 22, from 2.00 to 4.00 p.m., and will provide a foretaste of this year’s Global Economic Symposium (GES), which, in addition to numerous other topics, will also deal with the problem of global resource allocation.

The podium discussion will be moderated by Tagesschau news anchor Jan Hofer.
