April 20, 2011 The Bertelsmann Stiftung and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy signed strategic partnership to co-organize the solution forum GES

The Bertelsmann Stiftung and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) will now jointly organize the Global Economic Symposium (GES). The agreement for this long-term partnership was recently signed by Dr. Gunter Thielen, Chairman and CEO of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, and Prof. Dennis J. Snower, President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, Dr. Alessio J.G. Brown, Executive Director of the GES, and Andreas Esche, Senior Director of the Bertelsmann Stiftung.

According to Thielen, the motivation for this strategic partnership was the Bertelsmann Stiftung's desire to work with IfW to promote the international, interdisciplinary dialogue among the political, business, civil society and academic sectors. The goal of the dialogue will be to examine global challenges and generate ideas for responding to them, Thielen said.

The 2011 Global Economic Symposium, which will be dedicated to the topic "New forces of global governance," will be held on October 4-6 in Kiel. 400 leading decision makers from the political, business, academic and civil society spheres will convene to formulate solutions to the most pressing global problems.

The latest upheavals in North Africa have made clear the role that civil society can play in driving reform. A number of the symposium's events will therefore examine the question of how non-institutional actors can become more active participants in international cooperative ventures and multilateral decision-making efforts.

The GES 2012 will most probably take place in Rio de Janeiro.
