Durmuş Yilmaz

Governor, Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey

Durmuş Yilmaz I would like to welcome you to the Global Economic Symposium 2010, which is jointly organized by the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy at the Istanbul Congress Centre. It is a great pleasure for us to host this important event which was initiated two years ago by the Kiel Institute in order to create an international platform where policy makers, business executives, academics and civil society representatives will gather to define and propose concrete solutions to serious global problems faced by humankind.

In a world where economic agents can permanently be subject to systemic risks and where various kinds of unexpected global problems may occur, concrete suggestions to overcome these problems are vital.

During the Global Economic Symposium 2010, participants will have the opportunity to emphasize in a wide range of topics that are on the agenda of the International Community.

Issues regarding the Global Economy, the Global Society, the Global Polity and the Global Environment will be addressed by world’s leading experts with the aim of proposing new and concrete solutions to recent global problems in these areas. As in the previous years, I am expecting comprehensive and fruitful exchange of views during the Global Economic Symposium 2010.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all distinguished participants for being with us during the organization and to all sponsors for supporting the Symposium. As the bridge for centuries between civilizations due to its unique location and the European Capital of Culture 2010, Istanbul is the ideal venue for the Symposium.
