September 29, 2010 Kiel Institute President Snower Directs Five-Point Appeal at Economic Policy Makers

Urgent Global Problems Require Reorientation of Economic Policy

At the closing press conference of the Global Economic Symposium in Istanbul, Kiel Institute President Dennis J. Snower assessed this year’s symposium positively. “The more than 500 participants in the symposium have worked out a number of solutions to urgent global problems,” said Snower. These solutions are to be published in a booklet entitled Global Economic Solutions, which is to be sent to decision makers throughout the world.

Snower also directed a personal five-point appeal to policy makers to open themselves up to new, targeted economic policies. In particular, he appealed to them to create policies that

    • would effectively reduce the risk of countries going bankrupt,
    • would prevent system-relevant financial institutions from going bankrupt without raising public debt,
    • would tax carbon dioxide emissions uniformly throughout the world,
    • would combat the financial and growth problems engendered by aging populations,
    • would provide effective incentives for continuing training/education.
