We are living in times of major challenges, but they are also times of great opportunities. This calls for strategies with foresight that pave the way to sustainable growth and global development, as well as shared visions that guide international cooperation and can be adapted at the national level. In order to achieve this, we need to conduct an open dialog that is free of blinkers and free of inherited ideologies. The Global Economic Symposium is an excellent forum for this dialog!

One of the most important questions about the future concerns how we can secure the energy supply in a climate-friendly and economically rational way. Hence, at Wintershall we know that our field of business is of great importance in society. We have been active in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas for more than 75 years. Equally, Wintershall has more than 50 years’ experience in international cooperation. This cooperation beyond continental and cultural boundaries has taught us a great deal and we are happy to share this experience. At the same time, we know that there is still much we can learn from the outside perspective and from the dialog with scientific and political stakeholders. Both these aspects – corporate social responsibility as well as the desire to keep on learning – are, in our view, compelling reasons to take part in the Global Economic Symposium.

In order to achieve the necessary balance between climate protection, energy supply security, and market competition, we need an intelligent mix of measures. But we also need to be more clear about where state regulation is needed to promote innovation and where we simply need the courage to create the right political conditions to allow industry to find the solutions through its own dynamic forces.

Climate protection and sustainable development are inconceivable without a partnership between policy-makers, civil society, science, and industry. I firmly believe that this year’s Global Economic Symposium will help us to develop common approaches.
