A growing world population and increasing living standards imply large and accelerating resource use for individual consumption. The world’s population already consumes many of the planet’s resources in unsustainable ways. It seems that economic progress in developing countries will also follow this pattern. A remedy may lie in more conscious behavior by consumers: sustainable consumption.

Reduce the total amount of consumption

To make consumption sustainable, it is mandatory to reduce the overall amount of consumption. It is not enough to keep consumption at current levels and make it greener. It needs to be less. Sustainability at current consumption levels is an illusion. Consumption always has a footprint. Renewable energy or renewable feedstock, for example, do not ensure minimal environmental impact. Bioenergy can be harmful if done wrong.

Rapid population and economic growth in Asia put an increasing strain on natural resources. Asia can gain from rejecting the Western lifestyle of overconsumption. The narrative of consumption-led growth has to be redefined. Business leaders and political leaders should promote a new narrative that does not generate desires for excessive consumption.
