Among the world's unemployed, young people have been particularly hard hit. Youth unemployment rates are significantly higher than adult unemployment rates in both developed and developing countries. Global protest movements of young people are a manifestation of their lack of job prospects.

Youth unemployment spans two broad spheres of the educated unemployed and the uneducated unemployed.

Educated Unemployed: a festering problem
Young workers are the heart of any progressive society. Tackling the swelling numbers of the educated youth is therefore critical.
One of the ways to tackle this problem would be to revamp the educational system. Bringing in a robust reform in the form of compulsory industrial, on-the-job-training for a minimum period of one year would be a starting point directly addressing the need of the engaging the educated youth. This intensive training programme would focus on capacity building relevant for industrial employment. An open placement scheme and campus screening would be the meeting point for students and employers. This scheme envisages a compulsory minimum intake no of trainees based on the size, age, geography and profitability of the employer.

Bringing in a win-win solution
The benefits of this partnership could lead to a Win-Win situation for the Youth, the educational institutions as well as the prospective employer.

Benefits for the youth
For the youth this initiation period would help them get a grasp of the professional world and more importantly this would be a part of their learning.

Benefits for the educational institution
The educational institutions for long have been grappling with the problem of collaborating with the corporates and industries and opening up a long term association with them. With this exchange of skills database and on-the-job requirements the gap between academics and the demands of the professional world can be bridged.

Benefits for the employer
The raw talent of the youth workforce could be an asset to the organisations. By tapping this talent, the employer gains resource which is fresh in terms of competence, ideas, and mindset and they could be given training suit the organisation’s needs.
The win-win model would be a long term affordable solution creating value for the individual wherein Government incentives employers through monetary or non monetary schemes to guarantee success. This model is self sustainable as it protects and safeguards the timely trained manpower needs of the employer as well.A legislation can be passed for compulsory adherence by educational and training institutions.

Building capabilities in the uneducated unemployed
The problem of uneducated unemployed can be tackled at a micro level through specific vocational training programs. This can be imparted by respective state and central government funded institutions. The youth would be expected to participate in such programs based on their personal aptitude (native intelligence) and aspirations.Grassroot level NGOs could also partner these training programmes.
If implemented in the true spirit of the scheme it can result into a major transformation in the quality and capacity of youth leading to sustained employability and will boost the economy and well-being of the country.
