Water is one of our basic resources, but it is often in short supply not only for human use but also for ecological systems. While in some countries groundwater resources still are abundant and readily available for development, in others depletion due to overdrafting, water-logging, salination as well as pollution cause severe problems.

Address the problem of land grabs in Africa by strengthening the relevant countries’ governance. Promote anticorruption policies in these countries through foreign aid and assistance from NGOs.

There is concern that land grabs in Africa will aggravate the problem of water scarcity and possibly exacerbate issues of food security in the countries affected. A better solution would be to encourage and facilitate countries with adequate land and water to increase production and trade it as virtual water to water-poor and food-insecure countries, ensuring that the countries involved retain sovereignty over their own resources.

There is a strong possibility that governance systems and the risk of corruption in some countries will lead to “deals” that are not in their long-term interests. Aid from developed countries and the support of NGOs would increase the attention paid to improving governance and increasing transparency.
